Difference between welding and soldering copper exhaust pipe

GTAW

This process uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create the arc. The heat from the arc melts the base cooper, and a filler rod is used to add material. GMO

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as MIG welding, is another popular method for welding copper. GMAW is a bit faster than GTAW and can be used on thicker materials. 

This process also uses an electrode, but it is a consumable wire that melts and becomes part of the weld. GMAW is a clean process that produces minimal fumes or smoke.

Both GTAW and GMAW can be used to weld copper, but GTAW is typically the better choice for precision welding jobs. GMAW is a good choice for thicker materials or welding jobs that need to be completed quickly.

Factors to keep in consideration while welding copper pipe

  • FILLER ROD

When welding copper, it is important to use the proper filler rod. The most common filler rods used for copper are ERCopper and ERCuSi-A. These rods are designed specifically for welding copper and will provide the best results.

Copper is a common type of copper filler rod. It is made from 99.9% pure copper and is available in various diameters. Marcus-A is another common type of copper filler rod. It is made from 99.3% pure copper and contains silicon, which helps improve the weld’s flow.

  • SHIELDING GAS

When welding copper pipes, it is important to use the proper shielding gas. The most common types of shielding gas used for copper welding are 100% argon and 75% argon/25% CO2. These mixtures will provide the best results and help prevent oxidation of the cooper.

  • WELDING TECHNIQUES

It is also important to use the proper welding technique when welding copper. The most common technique used is the stringer bead method. 

This method involves making a series of small, closely spaced beads. The beads should overlap slightly and should be welded linearly.
